I am vociferously passionate about good books. And I hate adverbs.

Book Review - Out of the Darkness (Dark Horse #2) by Kate Sherwood

Out of the Darkness (Dark Horse, #2) - Kate Sherwood

This series of books is like crack. I can’t get enough. I’m reading until my eyes are bleeding, even though I have a daytime job that keeps me busy some 13 hours a day AND I’m doing the crazy ride of NaNoWriMo2013… I can't put these books down.

I don't WANT to put them down. I keep reading until 3 am, and then my days are shot to hell. And it is so totally worth it.

Let’s just say that these characters talk to me, shall we.

This author takes extra care to put her words well, in nigh-on perfect pitch. It is hard to stop reading, I tell you! (In case you missed that part).

In Out Of The Darkness, we follow Dan, still in present tense, and still lost in his mind's meanderings. He watches the world around him slightly different from the rest of us. I love his point of view, even though I get impatient with him at times when he puts himself down.

Experience can be both a bitch and a forceful master.

I was quite a bit upset with Evan and Jeff throughout this book, because they were never letting Dan have his moments of mourning Justin. They were constantly asking too much of Dan, and he was constantly thinking that they had a right to do so.

They were missing the fact that Dan is in mourning.

We see how Dan finally realizes that “Justin is irreplaceable…No one else will ever be that important for Dan, because no one else will ever need to be.” And I draw a huge lungful of air and think about how happy that makes me. That Dan won’t need anyone to be that important to him again, because he has HIMSELF.

Then there are several instances where I screamed with laughter too, because sometimes these boys are just baby-boys, after all, and crazy and full-on sweetness kills me. I’ll just go with one excerpt here:

“Damn, if there is leftover bacon…”

Tat frowns at him. “That’s an oxymoron, right? When two words can’t really go together?”

I love this series, the whole setting just feels so good.

And then I got to read four (4!) MORE extra short stories that the author has made available for free on AllRomance eBooks. That makes a full seven freebies in the universe. Not bad. Actually, lemme correct that: Eight. There is a last one, too, after #3. To round things up.

Brilliant. Just brilliant.

I was given an ARC of this book for free from the publisher, Dreamspinner Press.

A positive review was neither expected nor promised in return.
